• Earn While You Learn

I am very excited to share what a great help and support Living Hope Women’s Centers in Show Low has been to our community. I had a client come in last week for an Earn While You Learn class. After the class was over and we were praying, she shared with me, with tears in her eyes, that she is so grateful to be able to earn some diapers for her children. She said she understood that finances are tight for everyone. Before she started coming to LHWC, she and her husband were at the point of trying to sell what ever they could on Craigslist, just to buy diapers. She feels very blessed to have our support.

I love our Earn While You Learn program. We have curriculum that ranges from prenatal, postnatal, parenting, couples/marriage, financial, and abstinence. The great thing is that we have something for everyone in our community. Living Hope Women’s Centers is not just here for those who are in crisis, but is here for everyone who needs a little bit more support. We can put together a lesson plan that is unique to your needs.

Deena, a mother of 3 children says: “This program has been a blessing for me. I am expecting my fourth child and I have learned so much I never knew about. I have the ability to learn and to earn Mommy Money to be able to purchase anything from diapers and clothes to car seats. This program has helped me and everyone is so wonderful here.”

Nichole, an expecting Mother says: “I enjoy the knowledge I receive in the Earn While You Learn classes. I was amazed by the amount of information I was given. It all makes me feel more comfortable with what I am going through, because I know more about what to expect.”

  • Reaching the Lost in Whiteriver

Just a few days ago a young lady came into the center and after spending time hearing the Word through our client advocate, she gave her heart to the Lord! Praise the Lord that another soul has been added to the kingdom. Also, just a week ago, a young man came in and signed up for the Fatherhood Program and that same day gave his heart to the Lord! We have been receiving many returning clients that have been M.I.A. so to speak. I remember that Jesus said “I will never leave you, nor forsake you”. I pray these words over our clients and God hears and answers prayer! Our clients are returning. God is doing a tremendous work here in Whiteriver, reaching the hearts of men and women. Keep praying for our clients.

Our office has been active for the month of March, the new facility has made it more efficient to assist the clients. We’ve had 13 new clients total this month, and most are young men attending the Fatherhood Program here in Whiteriver. Young men come into the center with this look on their face “what am I doing here?!” They are just as unsure as the ladies they come with. However, after spending the time in class with Alfonso, they come out looking more confident. I pray to see more young fathers come out the class with a new attitude, and with a fresh faith.

We are moving forward with a positive mindset. Alfonso, the Fatherhood Client Advocate, attended his first jail service today, and we hope to establish weekly meetings there. We have also received over 208 dozen diapers for the month of March and more are still arriving. The local churches have been a great help with their donations! We are moving up, moving forward!

  • Post-Abortion Counseling

There are so many women in our community that have gone through an abortion. This is often a secret that women can’t bear to share with their pastors, friends or family. Post abortion counseling can help women work through the issues that arise from the guilt, stress, regret, etc. that they experience after having an abortion. We offer this very important healing through our ministry and I am so excited to be a part of our program. I am experiencing first-hand the benefits of this counseling.

I had my second Post-Abortion Counseling session last Thursday. I am so excited about what God has in store for this young lady. She is such a joy to have as a client. She told me that when she got up on Thursday she really didn't want to come in. She didn't want to have to revisit all the hurt and the pain. She went through her morning and it just kept nagging her. She really didn't want to come in. She told her friend to make sure she went anyway. Her friend said, "I need diapers so we are going". When we were finished and I handed her the workbook and journal and book to read, she felt very hopeful and couldn't wait to get started. She said she knew it was the devil that made her feel like not coming in because he doesn't want her to get help. I just love our time together. God has big plans for her and I am just excited to be able to be a part of her healing. Thank you Jesus.

  • The Day Our Cupboards Were Bare

One of the most appealing aspects of our ministry here at Living Hope Women's Centers is that we offer diapers in exchange for internal ministry money earned here. Our Earn While You Learn program provides wonderful curriculum on pregnancy, child rearing, discipline, life skills, Bible study, and healing from life’s wounds. When clients come in to take one of our DVD based classes, they earn Mommy Money or Daddy Dollars. This money can be spent in our Baby Boutiques, housed within each of our three centers, or at our resale boutique, Hopeful Treasures. Clients can buy two dozen diapers per week for $1 per dozen. This is a tremendous help to struggling families.

Every month our clients use their Earn While You Learn dollars to buy an average of around 1500 diapers. We have a tiny bit of budgeted money designated to buy diapers for the ministry but the vast majority of our supply relies on diaper donations from individuals and monthly diaper drives conducted by local churches. The demand is high for certain sizes of diapers (like Newborn and Size 4) and very low for other sizes (Sizes 1 and 2). Last fall we found ourselves struggling to keep up with the needs of our clients. The photo below was taken at that time. While it appears we had plenty of diapers, reality was that, aside from the two lonely packages of Size 4s, every other package in the closet was either Size 1 or size 2.

We put out a plea to our fantastic supporters, sending this photo along to show our desperate situation. What a blessing it was to see as day after day people brought in packages and boxes of diapers to fill up our shelves. One church has even committed to a monthly diaper donation on top of their regular financial gift. All of your donations are such a huge help. We couldn’t do our ministry without you. We so appreciate you and your support. We also deeply appreciate your prayers for the ministries of Living Hope Women's Centers. You guys are awesome! THANK YOU!

  • Spenders, Savers & Young Dads

Here at Living Hope Women’s Centers we’re proud of our “Earn While You Learn” program. It’s used by hundreds of crisis pregnancy centers across the country and the curriculum is outstanding. Using DVDs, worksheets and homework clients are taught a variety of topics including what to expect during pregnancy and the first years, potty training, discipline, marriage and relationships, life skills, financial discipline, and much more. In exchange for taking these classes, clients earn Mommy Money or Daddy Dollars they can spend in our Baby Boutique.

It’s fun to watch our young expectant moms as they start to earn their Mommy Money. Some are Spenders; they can’t wait to start buying things for their coming bundle of joy. They usually start by developing a stash of newborn sized diapers. When they think they have enough they start buying Size 1s. Sometimes moms are so excited they start buying clothes for the baby even before they know the sex. Our handmade quilts, sewn and donated with love and prayers, are always eye catching and sometimes a mom will buy several.

Some clients are Savers. They’re not so sure they want to buy diapers quite yet. They’re not sure of the baby’s sex, not sure what they’ll need, not sure what they might be given at a baby shower. They’re just plain not sure of anything, so they wait. Each week they tuck newly earned dollars into their folder with a thick pile of “money” saved up.

Some clients strike a neat balance. They venture into the world of storing up diapers but hang onto the bulk of their money, saving up to buy bigger things like a playpen, swing, or a crib. Whether a Saver or a Spender, once they learn their baby’s sex, that’s when any previous restraint gets unleashed. They can hardly wait to get inside the Baby Boutique and look through all the cute little outfits for their coming baby boy or girl.

But the most fun to watch with their Earn While You Learn money are the dads. We’re always thrilled to have dads come in and take classes. To see them investing in their baby and family is so rewarding and we know the family is off to a good start. When it comes to their Daddy Dollars, though, these young dads are so funny. They tend to hang on tightly to those little blue strips of paper until just the right time. They’re very careful what they let go of their dollars for. They patiently shop with their girlfriends or brides and let her pay for whatever purchases she selects. The question, “Whose dollars should we use?” is always answered with “Yours.”

Then one day something changes. When he’s ready to spend his blue dollars, his excitement and pride is evident even if he’s shy by nature. He’s buying something for his baby. After months of closely guarding his Daddy Dollars, one day a young dad will come out of the Baby Boutique carrying two quilts, a pair of Baby Nike tennis shoes, a little pair of hot pink stretch pants and a flowery t-shirt that says “My Dad is Handsome.” He sets the items down on the counter and I add up the cost of their purchases. Then Young Mom requests another two dozen diapers for their stash, adding two dollars to their total. Young Dad counts out just enough of his blue Daddy Dollars to cover the “fun” part of the purchase and waits for two pink Mommy dollars to land on the counter covering the diapers. Mom gives Dad a comical look. She holds back a laugh. And so do I.
